“GiveBIG” Donations on May 6 Surpass 2013 Giving!

Tuesday May 6th was Seattle’s 4th annual GiveBIG day!  GiveBIG donations surpassed 2013 giving by over a million dollars thereby channeling strong support to Seattle’s non profits. In just 24 hours 64,000 people pledged online donations to over 1500 charitable organizations that shared a portion of matching funds. Senior Services won a “golden ticket” this year garnering an additional $1,000 from the pool of matching dollars!

Health care and Aging organizations were among the 1600 charitable options awaiting GiveBIG day:

The ALS Association Evergreen Chapter, Alzheimers Association of Western and Central Washington, Bayview Manor Homes, Bellwether Housing, Cancer Lifeline, Eastside Friends of Seniors, Elderwise, Elder and Adult Day Services, Foss Home and Village, Federal Way Senior Center, Full Life Care, Hilltop House, International Drop in Center, Island Volunteer Caregivers, Kawabe Memorial House, Kent Parks Foundation, Kin On Community Center, National Asian Pacific Center on Aging, National Multiple Sclerosis Society- Greater Northwest Chapter, Nikkei Concerns, Norse Home, Northeast Seattle Together (NEST), Northaven Foundation, Northwest Kidney Center,  Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation, Phinney Neighborhood Association, Pike Market Food Bank and Senior Center, Rebuilding Together Seattle, Senior Services, Senior Services of Snohomish County, Seniors Creating Art, South Park Senior Center, Tacoma Lutheran Home and Retirement Community, Vashon Community Care, Vashon Maury Senior Center, Wallingford Community Senior Center.

Many eldercare helping and housing organizations in Seattle, not all of whom we mention above, are volunteer powered or are operating as non profits. They serve Seattle’s age 60+ residents who comprise nearly 18% of our local population. Budget cuts from Federal Sequestration, pressures on the Department of Social and Health Services, competition for affordable housing, and cuts to Metro transit all make our support of senior programs and resources even more important now. According to the excellent newly released report “New Partners for New Times: Area Plan on Aging 2014-2015” nearly 60% of Seattle’s 65+ residents rent. Thirty-five percent use busses as their main transportation. Seniors face an uncertain landscape of local resources. Our support makes a difference.

How did GiveBIG work? Beginning at midnight May 5 and lasting until midnight on May 6 The Seattle Foundation’s website accepted donations to registered charities. GiveBIG is an annual event that started in 2011. First year donations of 3.5 million dollars were, at that time, the county’s single most generous day of giving. However, each subsequent year has shattered that record. In addition to raising enormously important funds for Seattle’s non profits and helping organizations GiveBIG provides a platform for smaller charities who generally lack high profile fundraising ability. Equally important is GiveBIG’s showcase for the unique generosity of Seattle donors.
